Wear resistant welding solutions for mechanised agriculture and harvesting

In agriculture everything revolves around availability. Traditional farming involved little welding, but modern mechanised agriculture is full of machines doing heavy work day in, day out. Tractors, harvesters, planters and tillage implements are in constant contact with soil, sand and stone. The rotating parts wear, but it is above all that constant scouring along the ground that does the damage. Blades go blunt, ploughshares lose their shape, components fall out of tolerance. Where you encounter this work

Abrasion plays a role everywhere, but how fast it acts differs strongly per region. Soft, clay soil is gentler on your implements than the stony or volcanic soils in many other parts of the world, where components wear away in a fraction of the time. It is precisely there that a great deal of welding is done, because a new machine is rarely an option. Spare parts are not held in stock, and logistically or financially replacement is often simply not a choice.

Repair then wins over replacement. Restoring a worn component costs a few kilos of welding consumable and a few hours of work, and that is considerably cheaper than having a new part shipped in. In that practice we have built up decades of experience, from restoring ploughs and tillage parts to reconditioning complete harvesting machines.

Hardfacing

The most important product group for agriculture is hardfacing. These are welding consumables that make a surface more wear resistant and so allow a component to last longer. You build a worn part back up with a wear resistant weld layer, grind it back, and the component is back to size and can return to production.

Our basic electrodes are the versatile workhorses for general repair and maintenance work on steel. They are simple in use and broadly applicable, which makes them the logical choice for the everyday repairs in virtually every industry.

Electrodes
In the field machines are repaired on the spot during the season, in the open air. There you work with hardfacing electrodes (covered electrodes, also known as stick electrodes). These handle well under changing, less controlled conditions. Wire on the other hand is difficult to apply outdoors.

MIG/MAG cored wires
In the workshop or in an automated setup indoors, hardfacing wires (MIG/MAG wires and cored wires) are usually the better choice. Wire comes off a spool and feeds continuously, so you weld without interruptions. And for varied repair and maintenance work you can always fall back on Red Extra, from restoration work to lighter structures.
