From extraction to refining

The oil and gas industry covers the whole chain, from extraction where tubes are drilled into the ground, through transport by land and sea, to storage and refining. In the refinery steam is used to heat oils and separate them into distillates, an environment of high pressure and high temperature. In all those links components fail and maintenance takes place continuously. Hilco is active across this entire supply chain, with products for the process as well as for construction and pipeline installation.

Construction with high strength steel

Alongside the process side, oil and gas calls for a great deal of construction work. A refinery is in effect one large steel structure of frameworks, vessels and pipes. In that construction work it is not temperature that plays the leading role but strength. Structures have to be as light as possible and strong at the same time, because excess dead weight works against you. That is why building is done with high strength steel and thinner plate, which calls for welding consumables with high toughness and strength. Basic electrodes such as Basic and Basic Super are in their element here.

Laying pipelines in the field

For transport, pipelines are laid worldwide, often in the field and in the open air. That places its own demands on the electrode. With oil pipelines pressure or temperature barely play a role, because transport takes place at ambient temperature. What counts is a high degree of penetration and an electrode suited to welding outdoors, where welders sometimes keep the wind at bay with a small tent. For that we have specific pipeline electrodes such as the Hilcord Pipeweld 6010 and 7010.
