Keeping ships sailing

The strength of Hilco in shipbuilding lies in repair and maintenance. All over the world ships call at ports where maintenance and repair are needed, and it is exactly there that Hilco has a role. At yards in the Caribbean, in Panama, Singapore and other hubs, ships come in with damage after a collision or a manoeuvre, where new plate sections have to be welded in. Because ships are berthed at these locations anyway, repairs can be carried out quickly there. Hilco supplies the welding consumables for that, from the versatile HILCO HILCHROME 312R to specialist products such as HILCO BRONSIL, through distributors located close to these yards.

More than the hull alone

Repair on board goes beyond the hull. Much of the work is mechanical in nature and takes place in the engine room, on pumps, engine parts and bearings. The cast iron pumps are repaired with HILCO PURE NICKEL and HILCO NICKEL IRON for instance, bronze components with HILCO BRONSIL. In addition a ship carries countless fittings such as bollards, hooks and eyes, which can break off during mooring and have to be repaired. Repairs of this kind occur on virtually every ship type, from tankers and bulk carriers to cargo vessels, and keep ships operational during activity.

Repair while sailing

Hilco also makes a dozen or so products for maintenance on board ships, supplied under the label of a specialist partner. These products enable crew and technicians to carry out emergency repairs while sailing or in port, according to the procedures used on board. We take care of the welding side. In this way a ship remains self sufficient even while under way.

Aluminium and special applications

Alongside steel, aluminium plays a role, particularly on smaller and specific vessels such as yachts and minesweepers. For the repair of aluminium components Hilco has the right consumables. Here too, certified welding consumables are essential, because no ship anywhere in the world is approved if the electrodes and wires used have not been approved by an independent classification body. The whole chain has to be right.
