What if you do not know which steel you are welding?

In practice this happens often. A component breaks, a repair is needed quickly, but you do not know exactly which steel it is made of. The certificate is missing, the chemical composition is unknown, and yet the joint must hold. In such cases, the wrong electrode choice often makes the problem bigger rather than smaller.

Why the HILCHROME 312R is so widely applicable

The HILCHROME 312R produces an austenitic-ferritic weld metal with a high ferrite content. It is a covered electrode of the AWS: A5.4: ~E312-17 type, and one of the most versatile products in our range.  This composition gives it high strength and good tolerance to dilution with the base material. As a result, you can apply the electrode to almost all iron-based steels, whether hardened or not.

This makes it suitable for:

• repairs where the composition of the base material is unknown
• joining dissimilar steels
• difficult-to-weld steels such as spring steel, tool steel and manganese steel
• buffers and build-up layers before further welding

Because the electrode covers this broad range, you often need to keep only one product in stock to carry out a wide variety of repairs. This reduces the margin for errors and keeps your inventory manageable.

What to consider

The HILCHROME 312R is intended for ferrous base material. First rule out copper, copper alloys or aluminium, as these require different filler metals. For those materials we will gladly recommend a suitable alternative.

The HILCHROME 312R is a high-grade and therefore somewhat more expensive electrode. That choice pays off when a critical repair has to be right the first time. The electrode also welds smoothly and stably, so even less experienced welders achieve good results with it. The expected hardness, toughness, strength and composition can be found in the datasheet.
