In the classic power station fossil fuels are burned to heat water into steam. That steam drives a turbine, and the turbine a generator that produces electricity. What the power stations have in common is the use of steel grades that are continuously under pressure at greatly elevated temperatures, up to around five to six hundred degrees of superheated steam. That places high demands on the material, and it is exactly for this that Hilco holds creep resistant welding consumables.

The role of repair and maintenance

The greatest value of our welding consumables in the energy sector lies in repair and maintenance. Power stations work to fixed maintenance schedules, comparable to inspection intervals in aviation. After a known number of operating hours, critical components are checked for crack formation. Cracks appear everywhere over time, but at a certain point they become critical and intervention is needed. If a power station comes to an unexpected standstill, the right materials are needed quickly, and then availability is decisive. Hilco has the products ready for repairs of that kind.

Why creep resistance makes the difference

The term creep resistant means that a product retains its strength at elevated temperature. That is exactly what is needed for steels exposed to high pressure and high temperature at the same time. The creep resistance arises from the addition of chromium and molybdenum, which produce a fine grained structure and with it the retention of strength in the heat. The higher the operating temperature, the more heavily alloyed the product has to be.
