Repair instead of replacing for less downtime and a longer service life
When a component breaks, the replacement price is often not the biggest problem. The real cost lies in the downtime. Waiting for a new part that must be shipped, flown in or even specially produced means your production stands still in the meantime. A farmer cannot plough, a sugar mill comes to a halt and a refinery loses capacity. In many cases, repair offers a faster and wiser answer. Removing the component, restoring it and refitting it gets your process running again far sooner than waiting for replacement.
A second, third or even a tenth life
Repair and maintenance are not emergency measures but a fixed part of the process. In many industries, reconditioning is intended exactly this way. Consider:
- rollers in the sugar industry, which are periodically built up by welding and machined back to size
- earth-moving equipment in mining, where worn buckets and cutting edges are rebuilt and returned to their original dimensions
- tractors and harvesting machines in agriculture, which are subject to wear from abrasive ground
- engine rooms and components on board ships
With the right welding solution, such a component is given a working life again. Instead of being scrapped and replaced, the material stays in use.
Which products fit
The choice of the right product depends on the material, the type of wear and the application. To make components more wear-resistant, you use hardfacing products, available as covered electrodes and as wire. For earth-moving equipment, hardfacing electrodes such as the Hardmelt 600 are a logical choice.
For repairing cast iron components, such as pump housings, nickel and nickel-iron are suitable. For general maintenance on steel, a versatile electrode such as our RED EXTRA is widely applicable. And when the composition of the base material is unknown, the HILCHROME 312R offers a solution.
Quality and total cost
With hardfacing, the measured hardness is not the whole story. Two products with the same hardness can differ considerably in wear resistance. A hardness built up with molybdenum and chromium offers better resistance to abrasion at the same hardness as a cheaper variant based on a high carbon content. This means you need to apply for such a product less often.
Extending service life is also sustainability
Restoring components instead of replacing them extends service life and reduces the consumption of new material. This aligns with the sustainability goals that more companies are pursuing. Repair keeps material in the cycle and reduces the need for new parts.
